View Full Version : Behr deck stain? Anyone use this? HELP
09-28-2005, 10:38 AM
I just finished all the wood work on my big, beautiful deck and was planning on getting off early today to go home to stain it. I already bought all the stain I need. My father used SunFrog on his cedar garden shed and it looks AWESOME! I wanted my cedar deck to look similar. So I went to Home Depot and whaddya know, they don't carry it. I spoke with the "paint guy" and he said this Behr deck stain (401), which is a natural cedar tone, is very comprable to SunFrog. A dude at my work said he used Behr a couple years ago and it started to mold his deck. He went through this huge ordeal because there apparently was a law suit and recall on the product. He told me to return it and go get the SunFrog.
Does anyone have experience with staining a deck using either of these products. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I still want to stain my deck today because it's supposed to rain soon. I just needt o know if I should return the Behr or go ahead and try it. Thanks!!!!

MASCO CORPORATION: Homeowners to Receive $107M in Mold Suit Settlement
Homeowners who coated their houses, decks and fences with Masco
Corporation's Behr stains and wood sealant, will receive nearly
US$107.5 million in settlement of claims that the product failed to
protect wood from mildew and other weather-related damage, and promoted
mold growth, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. An additional $55
million may be granted to about 5,000 homeowners in Western Washington
who used four specific products.
The Company reached the nationwide settlement this week, and a
California court has tentatively approved the settlement in the class
action, which covers homeowners nationwide.
"It didn't do what it was supposed to do. We followed all the
directions because we wanted to preserve the deck, the beautiful color
and everything," Marge Oswald of Arnold, Calif., one of the named
plaintiffs in the suit, told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
A representative for the company declined to comment beyond a corporate
statement released yesterday. "All claims relating to the products
would be dismissed without any admission of liability or wrongdoing
following final court approval of the settlements," the statement says.
The national class action arose from a smaller suit filed in Western
Washington in 1998. According to court documents, the chemical company
that makes the mildew-killing poison Behr used in its stain warned
against using the poison in products that also use raw linseed oil.
Behr advertised its product highlighting the use of linseed oil,
however lawyers revealed that linseed oil actually feeds mildew,
promoting its spread, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.
Behr made several products under this nationwide claim, Natural Seal
Plus 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 92, 31-79, 31-81, 31-82, 31-83, 31-84, 31-
92 and 92, and Super Liquid Raw-Hide 12, 13, 31-12 and 31-13. Nearly 90
percent of the product was sold through Home Depot stores nationwide
since Jan. 1, 1991.

Here's a question for ya...Knowing this happened, would you still use their product if it isn't one of the #'s listed and doesn't have Linseed oil in the ingredients???

Well, after the big lawsuit against them, I am sure they fixed the problem, so I think I am just going to go ahead and use it...

I used Behr stain on my deck and it SUCKS!!!!!!! It was a pain to put on unlike most, it didn't even last a year before it wore off my deck. It was the (Premium wood toned weatherproofing wood sealer and finish). It was guaranteed to stay on for 4 years- yeah right!!! One area on my deck even turned green and had to be restained. Just an FYI. I will never use it again.

Kitty, poison, and Tim,
Where the hell were you before I left to go work on my deck? Haha...It's all good, I will just have to re-stain it with Sun Frog next year cause I finished staining my new deck and lattice (boy is that a bitch) last night. Kitty, it sounds like I used the same stuff as you, (Premium wood toned weatherproofing wood sealer and finish), but I thought it was relatively easy to apply. I used a air pump sprayer and then just had my dad follow with a roller. The lattice sucked cause all the strips on the backside were hard to get to. I appreciated your feedback guys. I will take some snapshots when I get my hot tub in and post'm up here. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how this stuff holds through the winter...
